For the second straight year, the struggling Raiders open up their campaign under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.
Yep, the 2009 NFL football season will once again begin on a Monday night for these Raiders who have yet to put up a winning season since the days when they still had Rich Gannon throwing footballs to Jerry Rice.
And mind you, THAT was a long time ago, back when the Oakland Raiders were actually good, good enough to win a Super Bowl. Since then, owner Al Davis was scrambling to find Gannon's replacement. He tried out guys like Kerry Collins, Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Daunte Culpepper and all of 'em failed miserably.
And while it's still a little too early to brand JaMarcus Russell as another failure in Oakland, another losing campaign just might do it.
If Russell has plans to take the Raiders out of the big hole they dug themselves into, he needs to have noticeable advancements in leadership, on-field savvy and for chrissakes, ACCURACY. After all, this will be Russell's third year in the league and he no longer has the luxury of playing like a jackass on game night and then act like everything is fine and dandy afterwards.
Perhaps former Raiders head coach John Madden said it best...
